Mini Pageboy Brush Out Hair Tutorial

I don't really want to make a habit of posting videos over here on the blog on Fridays, but just so you all know I plan on trying to get a YouTube video up every week on Thursday or Friday! This week I show you how I brush my hair into a smooth little pageboy style after I have it curled.

I filmed this just after I curled it for my last video, so it is the same hot set from my 1/2" barrel curling iron. I find curls from such a small curling iron, and that are left pinned up to cool, are strong enough to withstand a brush out. Brushing out a wet set takes much longer for me, but from the hot set it is less tiring!

I hope you all enjoy the video and have a great start to the weekend!

Moving Pictures: Recent YouTube Videos!

I'm having a busy week, is anyone else shocked that it is already mid June?! Can time slow down a bit I have a lot to get done! I did manage to run some errands around town and film a little video when I got home today, which is the video above here. I picked up some new brushes and make-up in an effort to boost my beauty game and begin the transition to cruelty free beauty stuff. Does anyone know of a good (and not soul crushingly pricey) cruelty free hairspray?

I'll also include my other two recent videos below. A big thanks to everyone who has been over to visit me on YouTube already! I can't wait to make more videos, especially hair tutorials now that I have cut my hair short. Oh by the way, did I mention I cut my hair into a chin length bob? Well...that happened! I am excited to try and create styles from the 20's through the late 50's with this one cut and I promise I will pass on any tips and tricks I discover along the way :)

Happy weekend everyone!

Your Beauty Mark by Dita Von Teese: Review and Thoughts

If you are a fan of burlesque star and general goddess of retro glamour Dita Von Teese, you probably know she has had a beauty book in the works for years. I had almost given up hope of such a book ever materializing, as it had been rather a long while since I first heard she was supposedly working on it. Now that the book, Your Beauty Mark, has finally arrived, and I have it in my hot little hands, I can certainly say it was well worth the wait!

The first thing you'll notice about this beauty bible is the overall size of the book, it is a large coffee table sized book, but unlike most "coffee table" books, Your Beauty Mark is full of much more than just gorgeous photographs (though it has many of those too). Broken into sections covering skincare, make-up, and hair, there are chapters devoted to more specific topics like physique, lipstick, and hair color. There are both poetic discussions on such topics, as well as step by step photo tutorials of how Dita herself applies her own glamorous look herself.

As a longtime fan of Dita, I am throughout enjoying reading through this book. It took a long time to complete, and it is obvious why, she poured herself into creating the book. Reading it feels like Dita is actually talking to you, giving you her best advice. Sure Dita has elevated beauty to an art form, and reading her routines does leave you feeling like you could never incorporate all of her inspiring regimens into your own slightly more mundane life. It is obvious Dita believes in finding ways of turning the ordinary everyday into more a more glamorous affair, with silk dressing gowns replacing over-sized t-shirts for example. Instead of being turned off by her utter dedication (near religious devotion) to living and creating a beautiful life at every moment, I am inspired to incorporate more glamour into my own life in the small ways I can. Not all of us can afford the expensive products she may mention (all the while being totally down to earth about the whole thing, and often suggesting less pricey alternatives) or trips to the spa, but all of us can learn from the rituals of self care that she describes in detail. She doesn't describe her routines herself as self care, but that's really what taking time for yourself, be it a nice bath or playing around with your make-up for fun, really is. In a world constantly telling us we aren't beautiful enough, aren't thin enough, what have you, feeling beautiful and taking time and pride in our appearance becomes an almost anarchist act.

Dita's message in the early passages of Your Beauty Mark is certainly one of celebrating both individuality and created beauty. Though it seems she may not think so herself, Dita does have a lot of "natural" beauty to work with but preaches what she calls the Hollywood makeover, the kind of created glamour that once turned plain Jane's from nowhere into the toast of 1940's Hollywood. The addition of lipstick and a new hairstyle can do wonders for a girl after all. The idea of creating beauty can become so twisted sometimes, as if we women do such things for men (ha!), but Dita clearly believes her routine and look give her an inner strength. As modern women, putting on our game faces if you will, our lipstick and rouge, can become politicized so easily. As a feminist I know there is a strange cloud around female beauty; what we are expected to look like, expected to aspire to, even as feminist what we are expected to rebel against. Raising beauty (make-up, hair, self-care) to such a high level seems indeed overtly feminine, and I'll not accept that something is less than because it is perceived as feminine. Dita seems to be saying go ahead- layer on the lipstick, buy frilly lingerie, be feminine. Not because you have to, not because you are expected to, but because you want to, because you enjoy it. Its a message I can certainly get behind.

I guess by now you can gather that I think this is a great book, it is full of inspiration and discipline worthy of aspiring to. Dita even describes her diet and exercise regime in a very straight forward way, preaching both the virtues of a healthy lifestyle and indulging occasionally when opportunity strikes. I really responded to the way she writes about exercise, being myself someone who seriously abhors exercise! There is a whole section on stretching (with lovely images of the ballerina like Dita showing you each move) and exercises you can do at home. The focus is never on weight loss or some unreachable level of thinness; instead it is on feeling good, and improving your posture and flexibility. As someone who rarely moves unless I really must, the whole section had me ready to incorporate just such an elegant routine into my own life soon.

As for putting my reviewer hat on and giving you at least one tiny complaint, I do wish the section about how Dita arranges her hot rollers included a setting pattern. You can kinda tell how she has the rollers positioned from the photos, but it would have been nice to have a diagram of her setting pattern. Still, I understand she doesn't want to give away all of her secrets ;)

I haven't even finished reading through this quite lengthy tome yet, I am savoring reading through a few chapters a night! I definitely recommended the book for fans of Dita or old Hollywood glamour. It has been inspiring me to take a look at my own routines and seeing where I can incorporate a little more care and time. I need to upgrade my skincare routine and use more sunscreen! Your Beauty Mark reads like the longest most thorough (and entertaining too) answer to the question Dita must be asked forever on repeat "So what is your beauty routine?"

Colourpop Fighter Lippie Stix Review

Los Angeles based cosmetics company Colourpop, who's virtues I have extolled before here, has released a new red lipstick! Yes, I do get excited about silly things like new red lipsticks. The new shade, called fighter, was released during the Met Ball. Debuting on Jessica Chastain's lips, apparently. I instantly knew I had to get my hands on it as a red collector!

Well, fighter is my new favorite red! It is perfect for summer, being a bright true red. It's not too blue or orange based, has no hint of a brick colored undertone, or tinge of burgundy, it is just really red! Like all Colourpop lippie stix it smells like jordan almonds (okay vanilla, but seriously these lipsticks smell like jordan almonds!) and is only $5. As I know most retro loving ladies out there love a good red lipstick, I just had to share. I know I will be rocking this new shade all summer long!

Disclaimer: Not sponsored, I just really love Colourpop!

Easy Bamboo Nail Art

Perhaps it was ogling all of the magnificent Chinese inspired fashion from last nights MET gala red carpet, but I was in the mood for some elegant bamboo inspired nail art today! I have never painted bamboo on my nails before, but it turned out to be pretty simple. I documented the process for anyone else who wants to try out this simple but pretty manicure...

Start out with your background color. The color I'm wearing here is actually NYC Flat Iron Green, which is so dark it mostly just looks black. Though I used a solid creme, I think this simple nail art would look great over shimmers too, or a gradient would be really pretty.

Have a few nail art brushes on hand. You will need two thin brushes to achieve this same look, one being thinner than the other. I use a tiny glass bowl (for doing acrylic nails, found at Sally Beauty Supply for .99 cents I believe) with some pure acetone in it to clean by brush as I go along.

Start with the "thicker" of the two brushes an paint on some segmented lines, the stalks of your bamboo. On some nails I painted two stalks, on some only one. Asymmetry is your friend for this design.

Next I used the thinner brush to do the same thing. On some nails I added the thinner stalks at an angle, on others I made them more parallel.

Lastly I added a few small "leaves" poking out from the stalks. As usual, none of this has to be very perfect to still get the look.

Add a layer of shiny topcoat and you're finished!

Though this color is actually a very dark green and not black, I think this design would be marvelous over actually black nails, it would definitely be pretty over red too.

If you guys missed the MET gala coverage last night, the Costume Institutes's exhibition theme this year is Fashion inspired by Chinese motifs and cultures. I would love to go to the exhibit, someone take me to New York!

Messy Mansion Stamping Plate Mini Review

You guys know how much I love nail art, and there is no easier way to achieve an awesome manicure than nail stamping. I have talked about stamping plates before here, but I wanted to share this manicure I am wearing this week that I created using Messy Mansion's MM32 Egyptian designs plate! Messy Mansion is a great independent stamping plate brand, this is the third plate I have bought from them and like the first two, it is awesome! The images (which are etched into a thin metal plate for those who are like "what is she talking about") are super sharp and clear and pick up great on my XL stamper.

To be clear, this is not a sponsored post, I paid for the new plate myself, I just want to share because I know others out there might want super cool Egyptian manicures the way I do! Nail stamping is super easy once you get the general hang of it and you can create really epic manicures in no time. I can also recommend MoYou London stamping plates, which are my other favorite brand. There are dozens of designs I have yet to acquire from MoYou, they have so many amazing themes and patterns!

Now I have to get back to sewing my brown jacket....

Spring Green Leaf Nail Art & Tutorial

Hello everyone! As everything has started to turn green again outside, I thought I would do a fun spring green manicure today! I photographed the steps so you too can have a mini garden on your nails if you desire.

You will need:

-A variety of green nail polishes and white nail polish
-Toothpicks or dotting tools
-Small nail art brushes
-Clear topcoat

I used a spare plastic scraper as a palette for my different greens.

I started each sprig with a thin swish.

Then I layered fronds onto my little fern branches with more small swoops, as usual with my nail tutorials, perfection is not necessary!

Add another layer of fronds in a different shade of green.

To make easy petals or leaves, use a slightly thicker brush and just gently press it down to achieve the simple shape. By using a more transparent nail polish you can get an almost variegated leaf look.

For the final touches I added clusters of white dots with a toothpick. You could also do yellow or pink dots, they will look like tiny flowers!

Fini! That's all folks, add topcoat and you are finished!

Hand Painted Rambling Rose Nails

Alright, I'll level with you, this design is not exactly easy or quick to achieve. However, sometimes you want a garden on your nails even if it takes a bit of time. I for one find doing my nails a relaxing me-time kind of treat and so I have included a little tutorial to show you how I achieved the look above. I want to say at the start that this manicure was inspired by the nail blogger LadyCrappo (odd name, beautiful nail designs I assure you). Her nail art is constantly inspiring me!

I started with a teal and navy gradient as my base, but you could also use a solid color. For a quick primer on how to achieve a gradient like this I shall refer you to an earlier nail tutorial of mine here. Also, gradients are a messy process so I apologize that my fingertips are a bit blue-stained for the remainder of this tutorial!

Dot some white or another pastel on a plastic surface that will serve as your pallet for your mini painting session. You can see my two tools for this nail art above, a medium sized dotting tool (available at sally beauty supply in a set) and a paintbrush I cut down. I literally just took a regular round paint brush and cut off bristles until only a few strands remained to make something thin enough to use for nail art.

First I painted white blobs on my nails, see not so hard to start off with!

Then I dotted on some creamy yellow blobs on top of my white shapes. I created the graphic below to illustrate how I built up the roses. Create a blob of color, add another layer of dots, then using a tiny brush sweep on small concentric-ish C-shaped "petals". The key to getting these to look like roses is the pattern of the C-shapes, start with two facing each other in the center of the blob/rose and then layer them until you reach the outside of the flower.

I forgot to bring a darker pink polish over to my work area so I just mixed one from the colors I had sitting on my table. The darkest color is for the C-shaped petals.

Here I have applied petals in pink over my blobs.

Then here I have done the C-shape petals in the darkest color. As always with my nail designs, note the lack of perfection, this is not fine art people! It can be messy and still turn out looking good in the end.

Lastly I added leaves and vines around the flowers. I just took my tiny brush in some olive green polish and drew "vines" connecting the roses, and then little tiny leaf shapes on the vines and at the base of the roses. Finally I added some lighter green highlights to the leaves and the design was finished! Top with a thick layer of topcoat being careful not to smudge anything!

Fini! Notice how sad my cuticles are right now ahhh! And as usual my nails are not all the same length because I am constantly breaking them. I wish I could have them a bit longer and evenly shaped, but it just is never to be when I break them so often! I ended up really liking this design, though I'll admit it was next to impossible to replicate on my right hand. I resorted to adding the roses on my thumb and ring finger as accents only. Despite the level of difficulty I hope some of you try painting a garden on your nails, it certainly is fun!
