Been Bobbed Before

I really had been trying to grow my hair out so I could do some more hair tutorials soon for YouTube...but I just didn't have the strength. I bobbed my hair once and now I can never seem to go back!

I was really excited about adding this #truevintage dress to my wardrobe, it is my first 1940's dress if you can believe it! And sure, it is nice in many ways, but you know what? Seeing these photos makes me really miss sewing my own clothes, because the fit in the shoulder here is just not how I would have done it. Also I need to hem up these sleeves a little, because this length is a bit awkward and unflattering. It's okay though because the skirt drape and the embroidered rayon crepe are lovely right?

I ended up having to do a bit of work on this dress when it arrived as many of the seams were falling apart. I sort of feel like with vintage, if I have to reinforce every seam anyway, mightn't I have just sewed a new dress that would be more durable and have a more custom fit? I am clearly not a vintage purest, in fact it's a pet peeve of mine. Perhaps part of that stems from my time working in textile and costume museum collections. I can't shut off the part of my brain that says preserving vintage clothing is more important than getting to wear it. What are your thoughts on "true" vintage? Personally I always find it such a bummer when I read something like "I wore this great 30's dress to dance last night and by the end of the night it was shredded and flaking away to nothing! Ha ha #truevintage" Like, we have a responsibility to these relics don't we? Ehhh... I'll get off my soapbox now before I offend anyone else.

Black and purple again though right? Yeah, I am super predictable these days. Should I keep the purple hair as we move into spring soon? I can never decide!

  1. I can't stay away from bob haircuts either, sigh.. I always promise myself I'll do something nice with long hair and then I grow it out and I look like I've dredged myself out of the local swamp. So what's the bother? I cut it short and then I don't have to worry about it.

I am so glad someone feels the same way as me about vintage items. I don't own many of them myself, but they ought to be treasured! They're historical items, people! I even dislike the idea of people making alterations to vintage items. I saw someone chop off the bottom of a 50's novelty skirt because it was "too long for her" and I felt so, so sad. I'm glad there are people around who take care of older items, I wish more people did.

It applies to sewing patterns too! I baulk every time I hear the words "vintage sewing pattern" and "papier-mâché" in the same sentence. I nearly fainted when the local thrift shop told me they used old sewing patterns to wrap delicate items. Anyways, I'm getting off my soap box too ;)

    1. Whenever I grow my hair out I always end up wearing it in a bun anyway, and where is the fun in that right? Better to chop it off, I agree!

  2. I do wear some true vintage, but then my tastes are later than yours and crimplene is nigh-indestructible. I still look after it, even so, and wouldn't dream of altering it. The only time I'd cut into a vintage piece is if it was damaged and I could salvage bits rather than throw the whole lot out. A lot of 'repro' just isn't accurate enough full-stop (pin-up is NOT the same as vintage, IMO), or doesn't have the fabrics I like (or are accurate enough), or is missing the little details that authentic vintage has... hopefully now I'm sewing I'll be able to get the best of both worlds and have something that looks like old and wears like new. But for non-sewers wanting a really authentic look, I can see how actual vintage is one way to go.

I miss my bob, and they are addictive cuts, but I'm so fat nowadays that my face looks spherical if I have one. You look beautiful. Keep bobbing along!

    1. I don't have a problem with people wearing vintage in general, I mean- I do it all the time, but just when people destroy particularly delicate or obviously-on-their-last-legs things. I totally agree that pin-up repro and authentic vintage repro are totally not the same, I wish there were more good authentic reproductions out there!

  3. This dress is just divine - the shape and cut are perfect on you and I am so glad that you were able to make it work. As in previous posts. I really love the black-purple look that matches your hair - a bob always suits you! Kx

  4. I cut my hair off in a pixie in 2010. This is the first year I have had the strength to make it to a bob. Yay! It is hard to grow out one's hair after it is cut.
