Sequined Sapphire

Though the galaxy tulle skirt I beaded last year was very fun, I actually think this sequined bolero project is my favorite of those two time intensive projects from last year. It all really just came together and I love the different finishes of the brocade, lace, matte and shining sequins, and glittering beads layered together. I figured since you all hadn't seen the bolero and matching dress together, I'd get dressed up and show you!

The set is one of my most favorite "evening" looks I have, and is about the fanciest ensemble in my closet currently. Too bad I don't get to get dressed up very often. This sapphire blue fabric was part of one of Gretchen Hirsch's Joanns fabric collaborations a few years back, and I wish they would reissue it in other colors, as it just glows and is one of the most beautiful fabrics I've ever worked with really. I have a yard of the grey colorway stashed away to make a pencil skirt, so perhaps I'll have to make that a reality sooner rather than later. Imagine it in rich red though, or emerald green, who do I need to talk to in order to make this happen?

A quick pencil skirt project could be just what I need after being stalled on sewing for so very long. I just have so many projects to do, and honestly I need to be prioritizing writing above everything else so I can get a manuscript finished. Sewing is faster than writing by far! Writing is much more anxiety inducing and time intensive. I can finish a skirt in a day, a book however...is proving to be more of a nearing decade long challenge. Do any of you write on the side? I feel like it's such a cliche, "Oh yeah, I'm working on a novel". At least I know I'm a competent seamstress, I'm much less secure in my fiction work ;)

Anyways, I have to go work through some plot details and research now, I hope you're all having a great week so far!

  2. As dazzling as sapphires! This outfit has so much va va voom. I know you wear full skirts quite a lot, so I was actually taken aback by the pencil shape here when I scrolled down - it looks amazing on you. It's just party perfect, and needs to be taken out a lot.

P.S. I write short stories and poetry. I would like to write more but need to get the 80,000 word PhD out of the way first! I think it's inevitable I will end up writing non-fiction one day relating to my work, maybe just a book chapter.

    1. Thank you Porcelina! It's funny people associate me with full skirts now as for the longest time I was super set against them and only wore pencil skirt shapes. Now I love both shapes <3 I think an 80,000 word PhD sounds like a very intense project and I wish you the best of luck getting through all that! I think academic writing really sapped me of all writing energy for a while there in school, I'm glad I came back to fiction eventually :)

    1. Thank you Kate-Em! The waist is mostly illusion but I'll take it! I'm always thinking of my waist size as quite large because vintage clothes always seem to be a 24" waist or something equally very small, thank goodness for sewing! I have never been able to write poetry myself, I'd like to get into reading more of it though!

  4. As another comment said I expected to scroll down and see one of your beautiful full skirts but instead there you are in an even more stunning pencil skirt silhouette. It's all totally amazing especially the sequin work. I don't write but am determined that this year I'll start a blog!

    1. Thank you Carol Ann! Blogging is great writing practice, and I find it's a fun way to keep a diary in a sense, as I can look back on really old posts and see how far I've come :)
