Cataloging Catalogs: Accessories, Montgomery Wards Spring/Summer 1943

Last time we looked at the fabrics pages of the spring/summer 1943 Montgomery Wards catalog and today I have some wonderful accessories! Rain boots, umbrellas, collars and dickies, handbags, and shoes! I especially love looking at the styles of clutch bags, because when shopping for bags I have noticed many 1940's bags labeled as 1970's, and when sellers make that dating mistake you can sometimes scoop up a really great deal. Usually since things from the 1940's are rarer than things from the 70's/80's they are priced much higher, so knowing how to spot 40's items is important for any collector. Knowing what different 1940s styles looked like also gives you the knowledge you need to spot later reproductions (again from the 80's and 90's) that are near identical to their 1940's counterparts, which are usually again selling for much less.

Oh, and also I've included the first few pages of shoes :) Dreamy, gorgeous shoes.

As usual, open these images in a new tab or save them for future reference to see the full size of the image and read the text and pricing info for each item. Feel free to save, pin, and share these pages with anyone who may enjoy them!

  2. How exactly does one wear a dickey? I get that it's supposed to look like a blouse, but I thought part of the point of wearing a blouse was to keep one's outer layer clean.

    1. You know, I'm not quite sure! They really are an archaic item now a days. Perhaps looking to have more blouses than you really did was somehow valued more than having to wash things more often I guess.
