Training Wheels

I found a grey suit! A few of you may have already caught a glimpse of this suit on my YouTube channel as I talked about it my most recent haul video from a few weeks back. I am so happy to finally have a grey 40's suit in my closet! You all know how I adore suiting, and this one even fits perfectly <3

For it's first outing I paired the suit with olive green accessories, including a silk scarf and new-to-me olive green ruched gloves. The moonglow style buttons on the suit jacket are a bit olive in color so I figured I'd run with that color scheme! I can't wait to style this neutral set with other colors in the future, or even other neutrals like black, brown, or navy. That's the best thing about grey, you can pair it with nearly everything! If only I could find grey accessories as easily as I can find grey clothing, as good grey pumps and handbags seem harder to come by. I know repro companies are limited in what they can produce, but I really need classic pumps in every color, and not in just fake patent leather (*cough*bait footwear help me out*). The brown heels I have on here, from Bettie Page via Unique Vintage, are unfortunately super painful. I was so excited to find brown shoes at first, but after hoping they'd break in or something, I have been disappointed to find that they only seem to be getting more painful. The perfect retro pump in grey, dark navy leather, and solid chocolate brown are all eluding me, so if any of you know of somewhere else I should be looking, let me know...

I have been thinking a lot lately about how my blog series on pattern drafting went really, well... poorly, and how I want to either revisit the idea entirely...or perhaps should I just start figuring out how to grade, produce, and sell my sewing patterns instead? Hmm... I often feel like I need to remove my training wheels, learn to finally balance this adulthood thing on my own, and I have to strike out on one idea or another eventually. I love making reproduction vintage clothing, and as I can't afford to have my own clothing line yet, perhaps I can at least offer patterns so all of you out there can sew your own "vintage" too. So here I am running the idea by you all, sewing patterns, Yes? No? Maybe?

Suit, Gloves, Clutch, & Hat: Vintage (Etsy)
Shoes: Unique Vintage (very painful, do not recommend)
Scarf: Gift

  1. I'd love to buy any patterns you made - your clothes are always so classic and elegant! Mind you, I personally loved your pattern drafting series so perhaps I'm not the best judge!

    1. Thank you so much! I'm glad it was useful for some, I think I could have done a better job explaining some things!

  2. What a beauty that suit is! A really good buy. I hope you get lots of wear out of it.

I found the pattern drafting interesting but do not have time at the moment to try it out unfortunately. One day!! As for patterns, I would be unlikely to order patterns from abroad due to postage costs and a weak pound (the Decades of Style ones were prohibitively expensive). And printable patterns try the patience of a saint!!

But while I'm not your target audience I am sure there are many others who are! Xx

    1. Thank you Porcelina! I welcome and understand your explanation! I also must to point you towards this link (https://www.netprinter.co.uk/sewing-pattern-printing/) for a UK based service who will print indie pdf patterns on large paper for home sewing use, which I just found in my research! It seems pretty reasonable, the largest sheet paper is only 1.50 to print, which may be a good option if you ever really fall for a pattern!

  3. I didn't see your pattern drafting series but am interested. What is the url?
I like your designs so patterns would be of interest to.

    1. Thank you! Clicking on the pattermaking tab (in gold/yellow in the side bar over <--- there) will filter the blog to just my pattern drafting posts :)

  4. First of all, I loved your drafting series! As someone who is just learning to sew properly (decades after my Grade 8 Home Ec sewing class), I found it fascinating and when I start drafting my own patterns, I will definitely rely on it. So don't be so hard on yourself!

Second, I would absolutely buy any of your patterns. I love your style and everything you make is beautifully designed. Go for it.

    1. Thank you so much! I suppose I didn't get much response on those posts and assumed people weren't into them, but perhaps that wasn't the case :)

  5. I didn't have the time to read/watch your pattern drafting series when you did it, but I have saved it to go through later! I would love to be able to have a sloper, as one of the most frustrating things about sewing is when things don't fit after all the work put into them. So all that to say, I will come back to your series, and thank-you for the work you put into it too!

    1. Thank you Nicole! It can be really hard when writing tutorials to gauge if they are confusing or not so hopefully the posts will be helpful down the road!
