Sunday Spotlight: Slash Neck Tops

Whew! You know it is much harder to find real vintage examples of the "slash" neckline style knit tops we modern gals are so fond of. What brought on my search? Well of course I have finally invested in some of the much loved Vivien of Holloway Slash Neck Tops that seem to be so popular among the retro crowd. I began wondering what actual vintage styles the top was based on and began my search for authentic examples and well, there weren't many to be found!

Now finding dresses with the straight across high neckline was easy enough:

It was harder to find examples of the same neck line style in knit tops (though there were several sweaters, mostly done in lace patterns):

These skirts though right?! One of each please!

So it seems the "slash neck" style of high straight across neck line was certainly around, and was even more popular in the early 1960s. I know I'll be wearing mine with 1950s looks even if they look a bit modern compared the the kind of thing I normally wear! I'll review the Vivien of Holloway tops as soon as mine get here from across the pond!

Till then, lets admire how some lovely gals in the vintage community wear their slash neck tops...

The ever stunning Miss Victory Violet in the navy blue slash neck top! So pretty paired with tartan :)

Cici of Cici Marie styles this entirely Vivien of Holloway ensemble so perfectly! I just picked up the circle skirt version of the same plaid as her skirt and am super excited to wear it!

Darling Nora of Nora Finds styled her pretty green version of the slash neck top with a super cool novelty print circle skirt and leather jacket while on vacation in Japan (I'm jealous).

I naughtily didn't ask these ladies if I could post their pictures here, so girls let me know if you want me to take them down, I was merely looking for slash neck top styling inspiration! Make sure to check out all three of these vintage mavens blogs for tons of great style if by some chance you aren't already following them!

Have any of you tried the Vivien of Holloway slash neck top? What are your thoughts and please tell me how you style yours!

  1. I was excited to see what archive pictures you'd found as I've also struggled to find many images of a slash neck worn as a straight top - impressed you managed it! And I'm totally ok - and flattered - to be included :)

    1. I wish I could find a few more images, but I'm happy to see at least a few! Your look was too cute so I just had to include it! <3

  2. A slash neck top is a style I really want to make as I know I'll want to wear it forever! I have a VOH one in forest green, and I miss it whenever it's in the laundry basket. They keep selling out of the other colours I want in my size. So, I am on the hunt for a pattern. Can't wait to see you in yours - and that new circle skirt! X

    1. I know there is a new indie sewing pattern making the rounds and I totally want to try it! I am so frustrated with how randomly the VOH tops come back in stock, since I have to pay for overseas shipping every time I spring for one! I'd have loved to have ordered all the colors I wanted at once, but instead I had to make multiple orders (all with separate shipping costs!) because as soon as I ordered the navy, the black came back in stock two days later etcetera etcetera! Not very convenient for their overseas customers!

  3. I love slash neck style tops but always think they were much more of late 50s/early 60s Beatnik thing. Audrey Hepburn had a thing for them during this period, particularly the Breton style ones.
I bought my VoH slash neck tops way back in January 2015 and did a review of the black one then. Looking at the photos from that post just makes me cringe! xx

    1. I totally get the beatnik vibe from them too, though I really want to try and style them earlier somehow. Those photos were totally cute, I was just looking at them for inspiration!

  4. I'm wary of trying them as I have a large bust. They look lovely on many of the bloggers I've seen, but I've yet to see another apple-bodied gal wearing them. Perhaps I should be the first...

    1. I'm sure other ladies would appreciate seeing the style reviewed by a larger busted gal! I really have appreciated how Trashy Diva has started using models of all shapes and sizes so their customer can get a better idea of how the various styles will look on them, other brands should follow their lead!

  5. I love the neckline on these tops and always think everyone who has one looks wonderful in them. I was interested in your research as I hadn't seen much of that neckline, except on dresses, until the early 60's either.
