Blue Velvet Christmas

Not the best shoes in the snow!
In indoor lighting this dress looks grey, outside it becomes slate blue, and in some lights the velvet looks more purple. It's just one of those transforming fabrics, and was a bit of a nightmare to work with! Oh velvet, I love thee...but also, I hate thee. I nervously stitched the center back zipper in by hand.

In the end the dress is very fun to wear, perfect for a holiday party (too bad I don't have any on my calendar). I paired the dress with a new-to-me 1950's hat (made of black lace and entirely beaded in tiny black glass seed beads) and my clear/white rhinestone jewelry. I took inspiration from some mid-century jewelry advertisements and pinned a rhinestone brooch at my waist. As I was leaving the house I remembered this little shell bag I carried at several dances in high school that matched the look perfectly. My patent heels have unfortunately seen better days, not that you can tell here as the snow positively stuck to them! Not the warmest choice of shoe for this snowy season!

This week will be a very busy one, I'll be working later than usual as we fulfill all of the many Christmas orders. I know I'll be dead tired by the end of the week, but I get the best reward ever on Thursday night- NEW STAR WARS! *cough* so sorry, I'm just a bit excited...

  1. The dress is totally gorgeous! There has been some velvet dresses poppig up lately, and I'm in love with them ALL! Did you draft this pattern yourself? The bodice and sleeves are lovely.

    1. Thank you so much Siri! This is actually the same pattern I used for a few cotton dresses this past summer and is indeed self drafted. I have several bodice and skirt patterns that I just swap around depending on what I'm after, these all in one kimono sleeves are my favorite!

  2. OMG, this is absolutely beautiful and is perfect on you. I think it would be perfect on me too!!! I cannot imagine how you could have styled it other than with the collar, tights and oh-so-classic heels. Wonderful! Kx

    1. Thank you! I could of (perhaps should have...) added a coat too as it was rather chilly out! :)

  3. You look absolutely divine, I love the purse and the brooch detail on the waist, so beautiful. These photos are so magical for me because I think it's been at least ten years since I have seen snow!

    1. Thank you Harlow! I thought to pin the brooch at my waist at the last minute and really like how it accented the dress. It has been very snowy here in Denver so far, though a lot of it melted today and turned to slippery ice tonight!

    1. Thank you Kate! Velvet is such a polarizing fabric as I know some people hate it, but I am firmly in the "love it!" camp.

  7. I can't keep up with all your stunning outfits! I have no idea how you manage to sew them all as well as document them ~ but that being said; this sapphire blue velvet is absolutely luscious! What a divine ensemble! ❤

    1. Aw thank you Bonita! I'm glad it seems that way as I feel I have gotten no sewing done this month and am feeling really behind!

  8. A million swoons!!! What a breathtakingly gorgeous winter ensemble. I wish I could clone that elegant velvet dress right now. It would be my New Year's frock this year, if I could. Seriously, lovely lady, you look head-turningly incredible!

    1. Thank you Jessica! I still don't have my New Year's plans sorted out yet, but I do have a different dress planned that I know I'd like to wear!
