Emerald in the Pines

While cheekily shopping for this fall I was super pleased to have found emerald colored gloves, and then I spotted this emerald green suit!

Alright, while it's true this suit isn't an absolute perfect fit, just look at the color! I had to make it work, and I have already taken in the waist about 2 inches and I could take it in more. If only I had a bit more tailoring experience! I also couldn't decide if I wanted to switch out the moonglow style plastic buttons or not, but decided to keep them for now. Moonglow buttons, after all, were a thing in the mid-century...which this suit, while indeed "vintage", is not.

No this suit isn't from the 1940's or 50's, it's from the 1980's or 90's! The telltale plastic zipper and more modern labels can confirm this date range. In this great color, and in 100% wool, I decided to take a chance on a "newer" suit and see if I could style it back several decades. It could still use a more pronounced hourglass/new look waist shape, but I think it will do! The only other issue with it are the awkward length sleeves, which are somewhere between being bracelet length and just being a bit too short. This suit isn't labeled as being petites which would have explained this strange sleeve length, but I'm just going to pretend they are supposed to be bracelet length sleeves and wear longer gloves with this jacket! The bright yellow gloves I have on here were another recent find, I have been so lucky finding gloves this season. This pair and another identical in style but bright orange I picked up for a steal and they are/were dead stock too which is always the best!

I hope you all had a relaxing weekend. I spent a whole day scanning and editing the last fashion pages of the 1943 Montgomery Wards catalog so expect to see more from Ward's very soon. The next few pages are all hats so they are extra dreamy!

  1. Suits are so classic, they can be 'converted' to a different decade fairly successfully with the right accessories - everything you've styled it with stops it looking 80s and makes it look decades earlier. I'd never have guessed it was 80s. (One of my favourites that I own is a 1970s one that looks really 1940s.)

    1. Thank you! It feels risky to match brights together, but sometimes it can be a nice change from neutrals!

  3. Such a divine colour! I think the 80s/90s did some great suits, you have to hunt a bit but they're out there. What a find, it's a keeper x

  4. The suit looks stunning on you. The colour is gorgeous and I would never have guessed it wasn't an earlier suit. If you ever get another more modern suit I would love to see what you had to do to make it fit better and look older.

    1. Thank you Carol Ann! All I did to this suit was take in the waist at the side seams, so nothing too complex because I don't know too much about tailoring!

  5. I love 1980's does vintage! It's all in the accessories, and how you style it. You did a great job with this one- it looks very mid century, and I never would have guessed it wasn't actually a 1940's/50's suit :)
