Forties Furs

A beautiful bird of prey (we couldn't tell if it was a hawk or an owl?) swooped over us just as we stopped to take a few photos of my new dress. My mom was only able to snap a quick photo, but isn't it rather serenely pretty anyways?

I really wanted to wear my new set of faux fur accessories over the weekend and I just managed to finish this simple black dress in time to make an outfit of them both! I really love the silly little hat, it's like a mini cossack hat in some way and I felt a bit northern European in all my (faux) fur. The dress was inspired by this photo of Barbara Stanwyck, though her dress is a heavy wool coat dress and my simpler variation is in a rayon polyester blended crepe. Basically I kept the strong shoulder, v-neck, and A-line skirt of Stanwyck's dress to create a basic black dress to wear in winter. The fabric was total bargain from Joanns red-tag section at just $4 a yard. I wasn't so sure about the dress until I pined in some shoulder pads and suddenly it felt perfectly early 40s! I know it seems pretty plain, but I can't wait to pair it with different accessories. The brooch and earrings are also new additions. The faux marchisite cut metal sparkles in a really unique way and I am glad I was able to find similar earrings to make a set.

We have been having a break from wintry weather for the past few days which has been most welcome. Hopefully the warmth will linger a little longer, it's nice to not be freezing!

    1. Thank you Ivana! I actually made the pattern for the dress myself unfortunately, so I can't point you towards one! Sorry about that!

  2. Ravishingly gorgeous - and incredibly elegant - ensemble. If this isn't a solid case for the need to see muffs return as cold weather wardrobe staples, I don't know what is!
