A List Maker

I am a list maker. I love to-do lists, lists of projects I want to make, lists of books I want to read, lists of shoes I'd like to buy...I love a nice list. Which was why in 2014 I compiled a list of every film, book, and TV show I watched the whole year long. It was fun to look over at the end of the year, and yet I totally forgot to keep up with it for 2015! (see last year's post here)

Well since I can't tell you what I watched and read in 2015, I'm going to list what I plan to watch and read in 2016! Call these resolutions, I want to finally feast my eyes on some classics I am long overdue in seeing!

Films:

-The Thin Man
-Casablanca (I know right? I've never seen it, it's absurd!)
-Kitty Foyle
-Once Upon a Honeymoon
-Top Hat
-Key Largo
-The Big Sleep
-Now Voyager
-How to Steal a Million
-Pin up Girl
-They met in Bombay
-2001 A Space Odyssey
-Gigi
-The Philadelphia Story
-To Catch a Thief

I need to watch all of the old Hollywood classics honestly...I have made good progress on this front recently during my time off watching The Women (1939) and The Lady Eve (1941). I enjoyed both immensely, the clothes in The Women (plus the star studded all female cast!) were so amazing! I also re-watched How to Marry a Millionaire and His Girl Friday while I was sewing on Wednesday, but they don't count as I'd seen them before! I would love suggestions to add to my classic movie list, especially fashion focused suggestions. I don't even care if a movie isn't so great as long as the costumes are divine! What are your favorite old Hollywood films?

As for what I'll be reading this year, I did ask for a few books for Christmas in a quest to read more in 2016. I spent a lot of time writing in 2015 (and I need to do even more this year again) but not very much reading, and that needs to change! Here is my reading list so far for the year ahead:

-Death on the Nile (Agatha Christie)
-D.V. (Diana Vreeland)
-The Cuckoo's Calling (Robert Galbraith/ J K Rowling)
-Welcome to Night Vale: A Novel (Joseph Fink, Jeffrey Cranor)
-Green Hills of Africa (Ernest Hemingway)

I also have a bunch of other books on my (recently re-organized) shelves that I have yet to read, and I'd like to try and read at least one book a month this year. That may seem like nothing, and I actually read very fast, it's just my time gets so split between watching films, the great TV these days, and writing too! Reading more is something I definitely want to make a priority in 2016.

How about you guys? Any classics on your to-watch list for this next year? Any film or book recommendations? I'm all ears :)

  1. The Cuckoo's Calling is so good! You're going to love it.

In term of classic movies, some of my favorites are Sunset Boulevard, It Happened One Night, Some Like It Hot, and Double Indemnity. All the costumes from what I can remember are really beautiful!

  2. Good group of lists!! The Thin Man is on the Watch TCM app now, if you have that. I need to see some of the 'Golden Age Hollywood' classics. I'll scribble up a list soon and cringe at how I haven't seen a lot of them.

    1. I just discovered the TCM online awesomeness this week (I watched Stage Door yesterday and liked it quite a lot!) Though it seems many of their current offerings are timed to leave soon so I better get to work!

  3. When it comes to clothes and costumes some of my favorite classic films are "Imitation of Life", Lana Turner's clothes are amazing, "Leave Her to Heaven", "To Catch a Thief" and "Rear Window", "Gilda". The costumes of "Samson and Delilah", even if they can't inspire a real outfit, are incredibly gorgeous, like the ones of "Cleopatra" (1934).

I took a look at you 2014 list and I loved "Only Lovers Left Alive", it's really beautiful (but I have a thing for Tom Hiddleston and vampires!)

    1. Thank you for the many suggestions, I shall add them to my list! I too love a well done vampire film, and also Tom Hiddleston, so I have to agree with you 100%!

  4. Ooh, I'd love to follow your progress! I've had the same thing in mind - that I need to give myself a serious education in classic Hollywood and 1940s films. I watched a few last year and hope to add to my list. You have a great list. I might need to borrow a few of those titles!

    1. I feel the same way, it's a shame I have still never seen so may of the classics! Easily remedied though :)

  5. Oo some of my favourite films are on your list! Hmm, I second lots of others' suggestions and would add Bringing Up Baby, Arsenic and Old Lace, My Man Godfrey, The Last Time I Saw Paris, Scarlet Street. I got a stash of dvds recently from a charity shop so I may add to the recommendations in the next few months xx

    1. What a great find! When our local video rental place went out of business a few years ago I took home a nice stack of DVD's for a great price and it felt like Christmas! I'll add these to my list :)

  6. Wonderful goals and lists. The Green Hills of Africa is a great read (and fun departure from his usual fiction offerings). I really think you'll enjoy it.

Happy watching and reading throughout 2016, sweet lady!

    1. I bought The Green Hills of Africa last year when I was having a jodphur obsessed safari moment (as I tend to do every summer, because I love the safari look!) but never read it! I'm glad to hear you liked it and now I'm really looking forward to it!

  7. I need too catch up on some classic Hollywood films too, I think some knitting and dad watching time is much needed. I haven't watched it yet but the costumes in Mildred Pierce are meant to be good. You also might like the fashion in a British tv show called The Paradise if you can get it. It is on Netflix here now. The Robert Galbraith books are very good, I am waiting for someone in my book group to turn up with the 3rd one. Enjoy!

    1. I tried watching the more recent Kate Winslet Mildred Pierce, and the costumes were super wonderful, but I didn't finish watching because it made me too sad! That awful daughter of hers! I'll try and watch the Joan Crawford version and see if I can stand it. I can't wait to start The Cuckoo's Calling!
