The Last Costume of the Year

What will it be? After my most recent costume, the Indian Cotton gown of course, you may imagine I would switch centuries, but...nope, more 18th century goodness I'm afraid! This time in wool, and plaid too if I can get my hands on some. Yes, the time has come to make an Outlander inspired costume! It seems like many other costumers out there have been working on a Scottish inspired ensemble, and I though I'm not usually one for a bandwagon or trend, this is one movement I'll not be missing out on. I havn't even finished watching the first season of the show! I am spacing out the episodes, gotta stretch that goodness out and make it last longer! Plus I have to actually purchase each episode via Google Play as I don't have Starz :)

So in the spirit of the lovely costumes on the show I plan on making a wool caraco jacket to wear with an embroidered stomacher. I'll be putting my very rusty crewel work embroidery skills to work for the stomacher and I am so excited to have an embroidery project again! I will try and find a suitable muted wool plaid for the skirt but may have to go with a solid color depending on what I can find in my price range. Luckily they have a lot of wool at my favorite fabric shop to look through. I may even find some bulky yarn to make a knitted cowl or collar like they wear on the show. Accurate to the 18th century? No. Adorable? Yes!

I also plan on making a short black wool cloak with a nice big hood. Mostly because I have always wanted a black cloak! My goal is to have the whole costume finished by Christmas, but we shall see how it goes. I'll begin the embroidered stomacher this week, and of course I'll be telling you all about that soon  :)

  3. Very cool project! Cloaks are amazing! They're one of my favourite garments ever. I wish they were still a wardrobe staple. Thankfully for history/vintage loving gals like us they still can be. I can hardly wait to see yours, sweet dear.

    1. Thanks Jessica! I have a white cloak, which obviously isnt very wearable! So I am excited to have a black short cloak which will be appropriate for the 18th century as well as retro outfits too!

  4. I haven't managed to watch Outlander yet but it is on the list! This sounds like a really interesting project. Combining sewing with embroidery and maybe knitting will be fabulous.
