Buffalo Check

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! An odd and misleading excuse for a holiday, but a nice day of family and food for sure. I like the idea of a holiday built around being thankfully and celebrating what you have, but the history of the origins leaves much to be desired. I do have a lot to be thankful for myself this year, and out shooting these photos I was thankful for the long sleeves of this new wool dress of mine, as there is a wintry chill in the air these days!

I had originally intended to make this wool buffalo plaid into a full skirt, but since it had a nice drape I decided to pick up another yard (it was just $3.97 a yard!) and make a dress instead. The plaid was a bit "fun" to work with, matching the stripes and having the yoke on the bias even though the plaid is asymmetric (being rectangles, not squares).  I wanted something more 1930's than I usually make, as I am lacking in 30's clothes. With the long slightly puffed sleeves there was a frightening moment where I thought the dress would turn out very 80's instead, but I think with the decorative buttons on and worn with a hat it looks reasonably 30's or 40's! I hope... This dress marks the first time I've made a matching fabric belt for one of my dresses, and surely it wont be the last. I picked up an authentic art deco vintage belt buckle for the belt from the ever reliable etsy. I paired the dress with my ancient burgundy t-strap heels and a vintage beige wool hat.

I hope you all have a most wonderful holiday! Don't get trampled in the Black Friday shopping madness, I'll be doing my shopping in my pajamas from home. Ah the joys of the internet :)

  1. That red and black plaid is such a terrific classic, and the dress really shows it off with the bias yoke and details. A super nice design project!

  3. I'm so glad you went full ball and turned the skirt into a dress ~ I think that the skirt would have been lovely, but as a dress you really get such an appreciation for that delicious plaid! It's absolutely gorgeous Bianca, and is sooo pretty with all that snow! :D ❤

I have issues with fully celebrating the holiday, but I do love a good reason to get dressed up and eat. Plus having a moment to think about what is good in life is always nice.

  7. A very lovely dress indeed and I don't see the 1980's at all! The colours look great against the snow.
