Hat Histories: Madame Suzy

Hat by Madame Suzy, c. 1944, Goldstein Museum of Design
It has been a while since the last hat histories! Sorry about that, there are plenty of milliners to talk about! Today we admire the hats of designer Madame Suzy!

After training as a millinery under Suzanne Talbot for 15 years and later working with Maria Guy, Madame Suzy opened up her own shop on the rue de la Paix in Paris. Setting up shop sometime in the late teens or early 1920's, Madame Suzy's clients included royalty like Marina Duchess of Kent and the Duchess of Windsor Wallis Simpson. Popular for her fashionable hats, Madame Suzy also launched several perfumes in the 1940's. Sadly the firm closed in the 1950's. Still we can admire the beautiful hats that remain in museum collection!

This hat is adorable! Slate blue velvet with iridescent feathers! I do feel bad for the poor bird though!

I love this hat! The multicolored straw! The beautiful handmade flowers! My goodness, I want one! (in every color)

Another hat I would wear in a heart beat! The perfect summer hat

Could this hat be any more glamorous? So girly with the pink ribbons, and the sheer brim! Gorgeous!

I love the scalloped tip of this hat with the fun stitching, I wonder how hard it would be to make something like this for myself

One of those items in red and green that is somewhere not at all Christmas looking! I love this hat!

AMAZING! Seriously, the colors and the amazing veiling are perfection!

Totally swoon worthy right? I wish there were still millinery sections in department stores these days, can you imagine the joy of trying on hats all afternoon? We need to bring hats back people, help me out okay? Ask your doctor if hats are right for you, wear a hat today!

  1. Love the top one, and the one with the sheer brim. Also the tomato red felt hat is simple, yet lovely :)

  3. One of my favourite things about Madame Suzy's work is that it never shied away from being unabashedly feminine. Something that rings true in my own wardrobe and that I admire in general so very, very much.

  6. I have two hats from her, just wondering if they’re worth anything?

    1. I would think so yes! Perhaps worth contacting an experienced vintage hat dealer like https://www.etsy.com/shop/BrionyLodgeVintage to see what they may be worth on the market currently, but in general vintage hats have value, and signed designer ones even more so!
