Red, White, & a Navy Blue Summer Suit

Happy 4th of July everybody! Though I am not a very patriotic person by nature, after the recent supreme court decisions, I am more inclined to celebrate this year! After a week of frantic sewing, I managed to finish this ensemble, including this fun little hat!

I bought these matching striped cottons while studying in London, and finally put them to use making this little tilt hat. I think it turned out so cute! I love how the stripes look cut on the bias around the edge of the brim. I decided to add a self pleated trim and made the edged fringed by pulling apart the fabric at the edges.

This suit was inspired directly by this photo from the 1940's that I have been obsessing over for months. I ordered this nice deep navy blue cotton twill from Mood fabrics and it was a joy to work with. I ended up having a bit of extra fabric too, and so I have made a second jacket that I will show you all soon. I ended up making the sleeves a bit too long on the second jacket, so I have to fix that and finish a few more things before the second one can make it's debut. This was my second time making hand sewn button holes and I am really happy with how they came out, even if they take a bit more time to complete. This jacket did come out a little bit big, so I may take it in in the waist just a little. I can't wait to wear this suit in the fall with mustard yellows and rusty orange!

I hope all of you have a lovely holiday weekend!

    1. Thank you Thana! I have yet to try sewing a suit from a vintage pattern, but I have to assume it is much easier than making the pattern from scratch! I think I'll try finding a pattern to use for my planned fall/winter suiting as I would really like a smooth tailored look and shall defer to the professionals!

    2. I have about 100 vintage patterns just sitting in a closet because I'm a little intimidated of them. So far I've only made children's clothing, but after seeing your suit I think I've been inspired to try something a little more complex! I think I know what kind of fall/winter suiting you're talking about, I may have a pattern like that.

    1. Thank you Emileigh! I still have a bit of fitting to do but I am very pleased it came out a tiny bit big and not a bit too small!

  6. I adore the jaunty cheerfulness of your tilt hat ~ it really is super cute, and it's so awesome you made it yourself! Your suit is lovely, I'm drooling over the navy color. I have been searching and searching for a 1940's navy suit, but I'm beginning to think I should sew one myself because they seem to be that hard to find! The pictures of the flowers are lovely, btw. ❤

    1. Thanks Bonita, the hat is rather a cheerful one, I think it is all the stripes that do it! I had been craving a dark navy pencil skirt, and I figured if I was going to be making the skirt I might as well make a little jacket too. The flowers in this particular field were so lovely, I wanted to take the blue ones home with me and re-plant them in our garden!

    1. Thanks Kate! I think the front of the suit will lay even smoother once I re-sew the buttons in a different way, so I need to get on that!
