Velvet, Wool, and a Forest in Autumn

I recently put together a fun fall leaf hat in bright yellows to match a great pair of gloves I had added to my collection. Luckily the hat took no time at all to make and I got to wear it while the trees are still glowing yellow as well. I will be bummed when all of the leaves soon fall away, but until then I plan to revel in the autumn color as long as I can!

This skirt is a favorite of mine from early fall right the way through winter, and this year I finally have petticoats to wear underneath it for a full 50's flared shape! I am actually wearing both my ivory and my black Malco Modes petticoats layered here for extra floof, and you should have seen the looks I was getting from the hikers around in my rather more impracticable ensemble. The jacket isn't really the right shape as it doesn't flare enough from the waist down to accommodate so much skirt, but I couldn't resist attempting a fall version of the traditional "new look". As for accessories, in addition to the new hat and yellow gloves I carried my trusty patent leather handbag and rhinestone jewelry. I wish I had gotten a better photo of the brooch I'm wearing here as it is a super fun shooting arrow that matches all of my other clear rhinestone things perfectly.

I had another busy weekend full of sewing. I'm still wrestling to finish up the bridesmaids dress as the silk is so temperamental and I want to get everything just right. I'll be done soon though, and it will be so nice to have a lovely silk dress in the end. I hope everyone else has been enjoying the fall colors as much as I have, I can't believe it will soon be time for Halloween.

Also, on a much more serious note, many of you have probably heard by now that one of our fellow vintage lovers and all around wonderful person Jessica Cangiano of the blog Chronically Vintage has lost her home and worldly possessions in a horrific house fire. I wanted to make sure and include the link to the You Caring fundraiser to help Jessica and her husband Tony here today, and encourage anyone who can help to do so and contribute. I can not even begin to imagine what the Cangiano's are going through right now, and I can only hope the rallying of the online vintage community can be of some help in this tragic and life changing time.

It does seem so silly to be posting an outfit here as I normally do on a Monday when something so serious has rocked our community. Like many I am still so shocked and devastated for Jessica and her immeasurable loss at this time. Please everyone send her good wishes and courage, she has always been a friend to all and it is our generosity now that is needed <3

  2. Beautiful look! It's funny, but everything that you're wearing - velvet, plaid, and yellow - is quite trendy in modern fashion at the moment. It's so fun to see how vintage and modern end up converging. That hat is seriously darling.
Such a shame about Jessica's situation, my heart absolutely breaks for her. It's been lovely to see how much people have stepped up, though - the last I looked the campaign met the $15,000 goal! Of course, that's just a start, but it's great to see people come together for such a sweet person.

    1. Thank you Porcelina! It's true a bit of forest is the best, and this most magical spot is just on the side of the road along my favorite mountain pass <3
