Making a Brimmed Hat: Examples & Inspiration

I have previously done a few hat making tutorials here on the blog (check out the DIYs and tutorials page), but I have never shown you all how I make brimmed hats! I thought since I will be constructing a new hat (with some wonderful striped ribbon) soon, I should document the process for you all and detail the methods I use to make basic brimmed hats like the hat above.

To make such a hat the materials are the same as I talked about in my Pillbox hat tutorials, the only difference being wiring the hat brim and attaching/covering it along with the crown portion of the hat. Using the same basic techniques the resulting look can vary quite wildly depending on the depth of the brim and the size of the crown of the hat, not to mention the various options for trimmings!

I thought today I would gather up some examples of extant vintage hats that could be made with the same techniques I will be tutorial-ing in the next few posts in this short series. So without further ado, lets admire some gorgeous hats shall we?

It seems silk hats in stripes or plaids were a bit of a trend in the 1940s! I'd love to find some colorful plaid taffeta to make into a hat one day, those who have been visiting here long know my love of plaid <3

I haven't quite decided how big I want to make my next hat, but I know I want to use black silk to cover the base to match the black stripes in the colorful striped ribbon that will be the main decoration on the finished hat. Have any of you tried making a brimmed hat before? What is the millinery technique you would most like to learn?

  1. Ooh, I've never tried making a brimmed hat, but I do want to make a pillbox. I have a small head, so it's either vintage hats or home-made for me; the one-size-fits-all options in modern shops are always too big.

    1. I have only made one so far this year, I haven't made nearly enough hats this year in general! Pillbox styles are a great place to start as they are a bit easier. I think I have the opposite problem in that my head is often too big! So its lots of hats that perch on the head as opposed to fit down around them for me :)

  2. How exciting! Every hat that you make knocks my socks right off. You have such a talent for the millinery arts and an incredible eye for design. I'm really looking forward to seeing your next gorgeous chapeau.
