Bee-fore Summer Ends

It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a bee...or just a bug? A scarab perhaps? Or maybe a cicada?

Well technically it's a modification of an art deco tile design I saw once online way back in, oh I dunno, 2011 perhaps? Yes I got a new little tattoo recently. I would say in life that I am a planner in general. I used to get really disappointed when anyone canceled plans on me back in high school and college (now of course, being less of a social being, I usually love it when plans get canceled because that means more writing time for me!). Spontaneity is not part of my repertoire, and though I had been thinking quite seriously about finally getting another tattoo, being me (I hate calling to make appointments) I had not set anything up. So it was a bit unusual for me to get up on a Saturday morning and drive down to a tattoo shop to walk in for a tattoo just like that.

But I did. And I waited for over five hours to be seen. Now that ladies and gentlemen, is a popular tattoo shop! I am picky about shops though, and seeing as I wasn't being picky about the artist, I wanted to go somewhere where I had seen all of the artists portfolios online and felt I could trust whoever I would end up being tattooed by was skilled. Luckily there was both an indie coffee shop and little used book store a few doors down. So I got myself an iced coffee and a book (Frog Music by Emma Donoghue, but no I haven't finished it yet) and sat on a bench next to some excited teens who were getting "like really thin roman numerals" on their fingers for several long hours. ("but like, could you draw it again, but like thinner?" I felt for the poor tattoo artist believe me). By the time seven PM rolled around I'll admit I was hungry, and my bum hurt from that wooden bench let me tell you...

I got my first tattoo when I was 22, five years ago. I don't find the process very painful, but then again I have only ever gotten tattooed on my inner forearm, so perhaps other places hurt more? I find the healing process more annoying actually, because when your skin is dry (think bad sunburn) you just want to scratch and you caaaan't! But now that it is almost healed, I am loving my little bee/bug more and more every day. Tattoos are weird, and I know some really don't like them, but I am really attached to mine. I think because I spent such a long time wanting them I am always just so happy to see them there? As if they have always been there and someone just made them visible so I could actually see them? That makes me sound like a crazy person...moving on!

I hadn't worn this grey gingham dress yet this summer, so that had to be remedied. This time I paired it with black accessories and pastel yellow gloves. These gloves are just so "Easter!!!" yellow to me somehow, so I hadn't worn them yet, but I really do like them! They are, or rather were until now, deadstock, aka brand new, too! Always nice to have deadstock gloves, nothing makes my little vaguely germaphobic vintage loving heart happier.

I hope you all had a lovely week, can you believe it is September! SO MUCH TO DO! Yikes

  1. Another dress that looks so good on you - shape, pattern everything. And, of course, beautifully accessorised! Kx

  2. I've never had a tattoo, but from what friends have told me it sounds like you deffo did the right thing by researching the person who'd be doing it. If you've got it for life, it had better be done properly.

    1. I usually do even more research and planning, this was rather a spontaneous one for me! ;)

  3. I love the classic-ness of this dress! Also, wonderful tattoo! Wow, five hours!? That's insane, but also a sign of a good shop like you said!

  4. I love your bag (& dress). Is it straw/raffia? Id love to find something similar. Also does it damage your clothing at all by rubbing against it while carrying it?
