Lemon Love

As soon as I saw this lemon print previewed online, I knew I just had to pick up some to make a summer dress. This lovely lightweight cotton sateen is one of Gretchen Hirsch's designs for fabric traditions, a fabric line sold at Joanns. I had been dreaming of a lemon print dress for ages, but I wanted something with a navy or black background so I snapped up this fabric real quick!

In the end I made it up into a rather simple dress, no frills just lemons! The pattern is cobbled together from my standard kimono sleeve bodice pattern paired with an A-line skirt. I was originally planning on making a slim skirted wiggle dress but the fabric had such a nice drape I decided on an A-line shaped skirt instead and I'm glad I made the switch! I had hoped to add rick rack edging to the neckline and sleeve hems but it will have to wait until I can get my hands on some vintage cotton rick rack as the modern polyester stuff isn't the same.

It's too bad you cant spot my earrings in any of these photos as they are new-to-me Bakelite rounds in lovely swirling green! I have really gotten into Bakelite lately, no surprises right? Luckily I can't collect the bangles as my hands are too wide/not bendy enough to get them off and on. I don't need another vintage item to collect I assure you!

I hope you all had a lovely weekend, I spent most of mine lounging through a Star Wars movie marathon with friends! It's not a traditional summer activity, but we had lots of fun all the same! :)

  3. So I re-discovered the article on how to make fluffy petticoats, if you're interested in trying to make some.

The article makes it look so easy! Well, if sewing 48 yards of satin ribbon binding counts as easy. :P But having made a few petticoats for either costuming or fancy dress purposes, it's not too hard.
