Come Sail Away

While I may be a totally congested and coughing fit mess now, it wasn't so long ago I was walking dockside admiring beautiful old tall ships in the California sun. What a difference a week or so can make!

In downtown San Diego there is a really cool maritime museum where you can tour several ships including the 1863 Star of India (which is perhaps the museum's most iconic ship). I have taken the tour through the museum a few times when I was a child, but I would just love to go again as an adult so that is definitely on the list for my next visit. The 1945 built USS Midway aircraft carrier is also just down the dock and I'd love to visit that museum as well. So much to do even in just one city! On this particular day we simply had a nice walk around admiring the ships and the bay before driving to a super hipster and delicious taco shack!

I wore my red and navy twill jacket I made last summer with a new matching skirt I made right before my trip! The skirt is modified from my usual pencil skirt pattern, flaring out to an A-line from the lower hips as opposed to from the waist as a normal A-line is done. It is also split into 6 panels and these seams are all top stitched in matching red. I added a small pleat in front and finished the skit with a lapped side zipper. I only wish it wasn't so wrinkled from sitting in the car, but eh what are you gonna do? I paired the suit with a new to me nautical brooch that I picked up from GoodyGoodyBerlin on Etsy (you all know her as Nicola from Just Another Wardrobe Experience). The brooch arrived very safely packaged and I can highly recommend her shop! Plus look how cute it is! With the little flags? I mean I had to have it for my nautical adventures! Another new addition is this amazing tooled leather clutch that I am just obsessed with. It is in such wonderful condition, but I noticed I'll have to be careful with it as even just a few days around San Diego and some of the thin leather stitching around the edges came apart (very small, I'll glue it and no one will know). Still, it is my new favorite bag and I await the arrival of spring and summer weather in Denver so i can use it once more.

Now that I am thoroughly nostalgic for my recent California jaunt, and remembering fondly my good health of just a little while ago (curse you airplane germs!), I am going to go find some cough medicine and more tea. I hope you are all having a lovely week!

  1. This outfit is just perfect for the setting! I'm glad for this inspiration, as next weekend I'm off to a Maritime themed birthday party, and I haven't chosen my outfit yet. I think that the brooch is darling, and really sets it off. x
