Sunday Spotlight: Bergman in Casablanca

Remarkably I had never seen Casablanca before this past weekend. Of course I loved it! Casablanca has everything I love in a film, 1940's clothes, an exotic setting, great actors, and an engaging script. Ingrid Bergman's costumes are divine and even the extras at Ricks Cafe American each night have enviable wardrobes worthy of study. It was interesting to me how "daytime" some of the hats seemed that the extras wore at night to the cafe. The sparking brooch pinned on Bergman's first ensemble stood out against the crisp white silky ensemble beautifully, and of course her suit and hat in the final scene are iconic. Hats off to costume designer Orry-Kelly. I know I'll be looking to her enviable wardrobe for inspiration once spring and summer arrive again. If only I had a trip to Casablanca, or Tangier, or perhaps Marrakesh on the books, I'll just have to dress like I do instead!

  1. I was shocked at how NOT a romantic movie it was, when I saw it on a Valentine's Day special at a small movie theatre. But the thing I love about her clothing is how effortless it looks. She just naturally always looks gorgeous. How can you not when all you own are crisply tailored slacks and skirts and perfectly cut silk blouses?

Also, I am SHOCKED to find out there is gambling in this establishment.

    1. Very effortless, she carries the clothes well and they never overpower her. I liked the level of romance in the film, poor Rick!

  2. I only saw Casablanca a year or two ago, and I was surprised by how much I liked it. I was expecting something a bit sappy, but it was quite snappy and funny in places. And her wardrobe is definitely a highlight - I love the white dress with the striped shirt underneath. She was so elegant in this film. I'm glad you it!

    1. Super elegant, I wish I could get away with wearing so much white and ivory (I'd be a stained mess to start with...)

  3. Beautiful costumes. I haven't seen it yet either. I have a big gap in my old movie knowledge which I need to fill!

  4. always adored the white suit in her first scene, but have been trying to find out exactly what the brooch looks like. It just sparkled in the movie and so beautiful. Isn't it odd that even though they were fleeing the germans and in danger every moment they still managed to pack an array of beautifully designed clothing and accessories! Gotta love hollywood!
