White Eyelet & Black Straw

It is easy once you already own one huge black straw hat to think perhaps that you don't need another one, but that is just silly. Why have just one huge black straw hat when you can have...what am I up to...four? hmmm, oops.

Well here is the latest acquisition, though I picked this hat up from Etsy last fall and have been patiently waiting for summer sun to finally wear it so it isn't exactly recent anymore. How often do you see huge hats in great condition with a full veil though? I can't be expected to just pass these things up.

Finally I have a crisp white dress to wear with this hat, and other black accessories, for a sharp contrasting look that I have been after for months since seeing some lovely images on Pinterest of  similar outfits. See those here, here, and here. I have never been one to wear white and I have never had a white dress before. I have always figured if black was supposed to be slimming, white would be the opposite, but after seeing such nice vintage images I had to have a white eyelet dress! I'm happy to report I think my theory was wrong, or perhaps I just have finally conquered the last shreds of some mild body dismorphia from my youth. Either way, I am already eyeing another white fabric with a big flower print for another possible white dress...

The dress itself is my standard bodice with a v-neckline and puff sleeves. The bodice is lined in white cotton but the sleeves and skirt are unlined for a more sheer look. The skirt is just a simple A-line cut which I have become quite fond of since the lack of darts means dresses go together even faster! I am happy to have another solid color dress in my wardrobe as they are so easy to style in new ways with different colors. I can see myself pairing this dress with red, brown, or navy in the near future!

I am actually really in the groove with sewing right now (*don't jinx it!!*). I just finished a new natural colored linen bolero suit this past weekend and I am about to dive into a silky floral navy dress I'm making specifically to go with my new Royal Vintage shoes; Which, speaking of-- I need to to go check the mailbox...

  1. A white dress is so classic and classy, and with black accessories there's definitely a movie star vibe! You look fantastic. The car is a great accessory too ;) I no longer have a white summer dress, my old ones wore out or I changed my taste in terms of style. So, something to add to my mental shopping list! X

    1. Thank you Porcelina! This is the only vintage car around I can get access to so I visit it pretty often :)

  2. I have never thought about wearing a pure white dress, but you have made me think about it now! You look terrific, and accessorising only with black was exactly the right thing to do. The whole look is a perfect match for you! Beautiful! Kx

  4. I love the whole outfit. I enjoy seeing your posts...you are very stylish and are an inspiration to me. Could you please let us know what pattern you made your dress from. I have bought some fabric and would love to use the same pattern you used.

    1. Thank you Mimi! That means so much to me to hear <3 Unfortunately I didn't use a commercial pattern to make this dress so I can't directly recommend one, as I draft all of my patterns myself. I have recently started to explain my patterning process here in a series of posts, but the major aspects of this dress are that it is a simple basic A-line skirt shape, a two dart (waist dart and side dart) bodice with a V neckline, and puffed sleeves (some puff sleeves have fullness at the shoulder and at the hem, these have fullness only at the shoulder). I'm sorry I can't be of more help!

  5. Lovely dress, it looks so chic. I like it paired with the black accessories and look forward to seeing it with other colours too. I never dare wear white, I know I would spill tea down it in an instant!

    1. Thank you Kate-Em! I do fear with my general inelegance and clumsy missteps it might not be clean white for long! I have to be careful ;)
