Highlights from Vogue Pattern Book Magazine Spring 1953

In addition to the huge Montgomery Ward catalog I acquired recently, I also picked up a few old sewing magazines including the February-March 1953 issue of Vogue Pattern Book magazine. Inside are illustrations of spring fashions, so I thought now that it was properly spring I should share the best pages with all of you! I scanned the most interesting images and present them here for you today for pinning and pining...if only we could still order lovely fabrics like those advertised in this magazine!

I didn't scan any of the advertisements from the back today, mostly because I was too jealous of the Shoes-To-Match (send in 1/3 yard and they will make custom pumps to match your dress!), and multiple ads for "...and so inexpensive!" covered buckle belt kits. Does anyone have a good source for covered buckle kits now? I'd love to get my hands on a bunch but they seem to be pretty pricey whenever I find them!

These novelty prints look awesome!

Umbrella print dress!

Another amazing novelty print!

More under the jump!

I love the dress on the left above, and the grey and purple colorway suits me just fine :)

Super chic double collar on this dress!

Why yes, I would like a cape coat for evening <3

Look at those angled darts! I don't move darts around very often, perhaps I should conquer that fear?

Another little cape!

This Onondaga silk ad on the back cover is one of my favorite images from the whole magazine! Great color combinations for spring :)

  2. Just beautiful. Here in the UK I've heard a few people mention that there's a company they send off to for covered belts and buttons, I wonder if there's one you could use. X

    1. Thanks Porcelina! I doubt there is a place in Colorado that does such a thing, as there is no clothing production here, but perhaps New York or LA would have an option for me.

  3. Oh, I would love to have shoes made to match a dress. How amazing would that be?

I get my buttons and buckles covered by someone who does it for a living. It's really reasonable and well worth it, they're always beautifully done. I costed some out last night for the dress I'm in the process of making and it would cost me just £9 for 24 1.5mm buttons covered in my fabric. It might be worth having a look for something similar in your region. xx

    1. I always love seeing the custom buttons on your projects, and that is indeed a super reasonable price too! I think for now I'll just stick to using vintage plastic/metal buckles and make matching belts with those, but one day!

    1. I thought that was the most unique look by far, I would have never thought of it!

  5. Beautiful dresses and fabrics. My eye was drawn to the cable knit jumper and long shorts. Would have thought the jumper would be too warm if it was shorts weather but I like the look.
