Through the Trees

Any bird enthusiasts know what kind of nest this is? It was so small!

Winter without snow seems almost more devoid of color than when it is shrouded in white. The crispy beige twigs and leaves seem drained of life, where as snow creates a crystalline beauty striking enough it doesn't need color. Which is a floral way of saying I am bummed the snow keeps melting before I can capture it on camera.

This suit jacket has the biggest shoulders I have yet encountered in vintage 1940s suiting! It's also quite long on me, which proportionally would look better with a matching skirt, but time separated this jacket from its skirt long before I picket it up during the wonderful FabGab's Black Friday sale. Still, the pinstripes and sharp shoulders make me feel like a bit Hildy Johnson (aka Rosalind Russel) in His Girl Friday, so all's well. I paired the sober grey jacket with the skirt from my black suit and brighter orange accessories for some needed color. Once upon a time I said I would never collect gloves, they just weren't for me, but oh how I have changed my tune! Gloves are one of my most favorite accessories now, they provide such a great opportunity for getting some nice color and harmony into an ensemble. The orange pair I have on here will be so great for next fall!

I hope all of you had a great weekend despite Friday being, lets face it, one of the stupidest days in the history of the USA (and that's saying something). It was only the women's marches on Saturday that gave me hope again, and for that it was well worth waking up very early on the weekend to go for a walk with a few tens of thousands of other women!

  1. Orange and grey, what a combo! I have some orange gloves, I should remember to wear them with a grey coat. That's a fine jacket, the shoulders are indeed awesome.

Great to hear you were on the march, we were watching the inauguration on Friday with disbelief. Mind you, my country just voted for Brexit, so lots of stupid things going on!!

    xx

    1. Thank you Porcelina! I am so happy I finally found a pair of orange gloves, I can't wait to wear them with more fall colors next autumn.

We boycott watching any inauguration coverage so I have seen but a single photo (an aerial photo comparing the tiny crowd in DC with the mass of people who were there for president Obama's inauguration). Way too much stupid things going on, ridiculous.

  2. I adore your use of orange here - inspired!

The marches certainly provided an antidote to the deeper of Friday (and subsequent days). Kx

    1. Thanks Nora! I am trying to keep my spirits (and creative energy) up and encourage other women to do the same, succeeding in the face of such a negative world seems like an act of rebellion. Darn UK has its own problems with stupid Brexit!

  5. Those pops of orange are brilliant.

Eeeeeh, politics. I'm trying to do my bit: I keep signing petitions to my government, and I recently started making regular donations to a local grassroots arts organisation because working class people need the arts too, but in general my aim is to BE NICE. To everyone of every colour and class and age and religion. 'Cos the more I look at what some people are doing, the more revolutionary BE NICE seems. All hail the pussyhat.

    1. Thank you Mim! It sounds like you have a great way forward with how you have been helping out. I have little hope for things at the national level here right now, so local community organizations and donating where it will make the most impact sounds like the best option. Being nice is so important, and it shouldn't be political, being kind to all is just common decency! Strange world we live in.

  6. This outfit is stunning! I also ADORE what you have done with the scarf around the neck area to give the illusion of a wrap blouse and tie in the color from the gloves! Talk about brilliant!!

I applaud your mention of politics. I have yet to tackle the issue on my blog. In some ways I want my blog to remain void of it (to to retain some sense of normalcy for the most part), but I feel like sooner or later that will become impossible.

    1. Thank you Janey! I feel conflicted about including political views on my blog sometimes too, but I figure if I offend someone by talking about feminism or wanting equality for all then perhaps I don't want them visiting my blog anyways. Still blogs are a nice escape from the negative news and reality we're stuck in now, and so not mentioning it can be a nice relief. I go back and forth!

  7. Love the pops of orange. A welcome cheerful contrast to both our countries political situations. Keep meaning to say that if you want a pussyhat I'll knit you one.

    1. Thank you Kate-Em! We have to keep being passionate and creative as much as we can in these bleak times. Thank you for the hat offer, I think they are super cute but understand some people find the idea of "pussyhats" to be excluding to transgender or intersex women so I'm going to march bareheaded for now, but I really appreciate the offer <3
