Sunday Spotlight: Mogambo

Clark Gable, Grace Kelly, and Ava Gardner in Africa, what a combination! The story in Mogambo (1953) may be a bit staid (I am not a huge fan of the love triangle) but the fashion certainly is not! My goodness the style in this film is to die for, both ladies lave the most gorgeous clothes for their separate safaris.

I highly recommend the film for the fashion on display alone, but Ava Gardner is also a joy to watch and I want to be friends with her character. Lets be honest and say Gable is too old for either Gardner or Kelly, but I can see why they fall for him all the same. I love how both ladies have dozens of suitcases as they also have dozens of outfits each as well! I love Gardner's full skirts and off the shoulder sweaters with sexy strappy heels just as much as the way she wears her safari shirts with the sleeves rolled up and tucked into high waisted trousers. Kelly's more prim look is just as gorgeous, with her super cute camel safaru suit and perfect collared blouses. I adored the clothing in this film, and it has already inspired me to wear cute little scarves at the neck more often!

What have you all been watching lately?

  1. I had not heard of this film but I might look it out for the fashion as it all looks so lovely. Those ladies have some great outfits.

    1. Keep an eye on TCM (do you all have TCM over there?) It was like a safari fashion show!

    2. I think TCM does exist here but we don't have Sky, just Freeview so I don't think I can get it.

  2. I just love love love all the resources you've found on the explorer/safari look. Every update is very exciting for me to read. :)

Re: the film, I am shocked that Ava Gardiner's character had bare shoulders in hot African sun! (I'm currently sunburned, so perhaps I'm biased :P). I like the more tailored, structured button up look from the film, as the full skirts + off the shoulder sweaters just looks like standard 50s stuff.

I want the white pleated dress with that fabulous collar! Such beautiful pictures.

  3. If I was making a list (and who knows, perhaps I will one day :)) of my favourite 1950s movies from a fashion standpoint, this would make it into the top ten - if not the top five - for sure. The blend of understated elegance, classically feminine lines, and fabulous adventurer details speaks to me on countless sartorial levels.
