Tartan Triumphant

Whew! That was one doozy of a project. The tartan suit is finished! I wore it on Saturday to the reopening of the Avenir museum up in Fort Collins and received many lovely comments on it. After all, it's not everyday you see a plaid suit anymore!

It was so much fun to wear this look. The hat is a newer addition as well, and is just 1940's jaunty perfection in my opinion! The handbag is one you all haven't seen yet, though as it matches nearly everything in my closet you will be seeing a lot of it moving forward. I am so glad to have expanded my vintage accessories collection to include handbags and gloves, I feel like they really finish off the look with an outfit such as this one.

Also, no I didn't realize the plaid on the jacket would actually line up with that of the skirt, that was by random accident. There were a few accidents while I was making the skirt, and not all of them happy ones like plaids matching up by chance. If you follow me on instagram you'll know I had a bit of a crisis when I made a very wrong move while cutting out the skirt! I certainly learned a few things making this suit, and I'll go into more of that later this week, but lets just say one lesson learned is do not try and make a skirt when you have already been sewing all day and really just need to go to bed!

I am so happy to finally have this suit hanging in my closet, I'll be adding a few more shortly, but I'll explain that hint later! Have a great start to the week everybody!

And how lucky for the jacket to match up with the skirt like that! I'm excited to see your progress post in detail. <3

  4. Wow! It turned out so fabulous! I've been wanting to play with plaid too but I've been nervous about getting it to match up. You did a spectacular job and it looks like fits like a dream!

    1. Thank you Brittany! Matching the plaids defiantly takes a bit of mental acrobatics, which is why I usually try to stick to simpler shapes when sewing with plaid. After this suit I have a few solid projects lined up with no patterns to match :)

    1. Thank you so much Nora! I had put off making this suit for ages (I'd had the fabric knocking around for years) and I am so glad to finally have it hanging in my closet now. I wish you good sewing vibes :)

  7. You made this? Wow! You have such a talent, this is absolutely gorgeous. I love that you picked a plaid for your suit (and a bold, blue one at that), and it really was a happy accident that the plaids matched up.
On a side note, I love to see Coloradans with great vintage style. I grew up in Ft. Morgan, and I don't remember anyone dressing particularly well. ;)

    1. Thank you Jessica! I really love plaid, so I simply had to have a plaid suit eventually :) Sadly Coloradan's still don't really have very great style in general. It's a pretty casual place, people love their northface jackets and ugg boots here for sure. I wish there was a bigger vintage scene in Denver, though I hope to one day move to London UK where there is a huge vintage crowd!

  9. You did such a great job pulling this one together! I just love how the plaid patterning is in such perfect placement {try saying that one five times fast!}, and the emerald green/sapphire blue colourway is just stunning!! What a fantastic make!! ❤
