Capitols and Colonnades

Remember back on the 4th of July when I showed you guys my new navy blue summer suit, how I said I had made a second jacket? Well here it is! I realized I was going to have more than enough navy twill so I decided to make a second matching jacket with a contrasting color. I was feeling a bit patriotic after watching all of Agent Carter within the span of a few days, so I choose a dark red to pair with the navy blue. I was worried the little pointed raglan sections on the shoulders of this jacket would come out looking kinds "western", but I think I succeeded in avoiding that! The sleeves are a bit too long, but I am just too lazy at this point to remove the cuffs, trim the ends and put the cuffs back on. A project for another time perhaps!

I made a summery version of Peggy Carter's white silk blouse with red stitching from episode 1 of the show (see it here). I'm telling you, Peggy Carter is my idol guys! She's such a badass! Anyway, I modified my usual short kimono sleeve blouse pattern to button up in the front, added the collar extension, and used three rows of red top-stitching instead of the six rows that are on Peggy's blouse. I really like how this little shirt came out! I am still having some trouble getting my shawl collars perfect, I think I need to add a separate facing inside for the back. The other option would to just learn how to make regular collars! (I have only ever sewn one back in school)

I paired the suit with my white heels and my ever present hair flowers. I actually slept in sponge rollers the night before, but the set wouldn't behave so my extra poofy hair ended up being wrangled into its usual bun. I was hoping for pretty 40's curls but my hair had other ideas. I think I need a better/specific brush for brushing out wet sets. I also think I rolled the hair around each curler too tightly too. My hair is probably too long for the style I was going for too :( All of which lead to me sleeping very poorly, waking up with a sore neck (and ear oddly, as it was being crushed by a curler) and no cute hair to show for it! I was disappointed for sure! I may try buying those hot sticks curlers and see if I can skip the whole sleeping in curlers deal!

I wore this ensemble to visit In Bloom (see yesterday's post) at the Denver Art Museum. The museum is next to Civic Center park in front of Colorado's state capitol building, and the park has these lovely areas of classical colonnades. Sadly (for several reasons), they are quite sketchy as Denver's homeless use the area as shelter. It would be better for all if Denver had a better solution, especially in winter when it gets to be freezing outside! Inefficiency and inequality at work sadly. The perfect example of government right, gleaming marble and people in need *le sigh* but I digress...

On that cheerful note, I'll talk to you all again tomorrow!

    1. Aw thank you so much Jessica! I really took my time sewing this jacket so that means a lot <3 It's strange I didn't use to wear blue much and now it is slowly taking over my closet, and brown too!

  3. When I had long hair (REALLY long hair) I would use a sharpie marker to roll my hair up with, slide the marker out and bobby pin the curl in place. This is how I would sleep, and the curls always stayed in. It's very comfortable to sleep in too. Maybe you can give this method a try?

    1. That sounds like pin curls basically, which are super accurate! My hair is super thick so it takes me forever to pin curl it and it never dries all the way sadly. I am looking into trying hot sticks (thin hot roller-ish things) next in a bid to not have to sleep on curlers of any kind :)

  6. I haven't seen Agent Carter yet ~ we are planning to watch some tonight (*squee*) but your outfit totally looks like something Peggy would wear and I adore how different your skirt looks with that new suit jacket! So sharp, so chic! A wonderful job once again. ❤
