The Cloche

As I was saying in my last post, I just adore the fashion in Miss Fishers Murder Mysteries! Miss Fisher's hats have been causing me such envious pangs of desire that I have been scouring the internet in search of similar glorious 20's inspired creations. To no avail sadly, at least not anywhere near my price range! So I decided to root through my closet and craft-room and find hats of my own to modify into Phryne Fisher worthy cloche toppers!

I started by adding a few ostrich feathers to my only actual cloche hat, a dark grey simple hat from Target. I then moved onto a straw number that was a beach hat woven from paper made to look like straw that I have had since middle school. I cut down the brim to a more 20's like shape, bound the new edge in cotton lace and sewed on lots of feathers. Both of these efforts were successful but photos will have to wait until another day. I then started on the last hat transformation of the day, turning a black wool bowler hat into an Art Deco cloche!

I started by trimming off most of the brim, then I cut out swirls of burgundy felt and arranged and steamed them to lay nicely over the curves of the hat. Then came the rather tedious job of hand sewing the felt shapes onto the hat.

I think this last hat makeover turned out perfectly Art Deco! I can't wait to wear it with my hair set in tiny 20's curls and a great dress. In fact have a few sheer 20's dresses to show you soon; I actually have to finish hemming one tomorrow morning as I plan on wearing it tomorrow night!

  1. This is such inspirational work! You've done an amazing job on this, those swirls just look perfect for the era. I love it.

Cloches are one of my favourite styles to make, and I love revamping old hats too, so this is right up my street. I can't wait to see your other ones.

    1. Thank you so much Tanith! I traced the swirls from my french curve ruler from my pattern drafting arsenal! turns out the swirl was the perfect size!

I have been falling more and more for cloches! I have my eye on a nice cloche block with a double brim for more cloche adventures in the future, millinery supplies can be such an investment though! I'd love to expand my millinery skills as I have only had a couple of courses on specific techniques.
