Malco Modes Samantha Petticoat Review

Like I said earlier this week, when I first decided to get a petticoat I messed up and bought cheap ones on Amazon. After that misstep I searched "best pin up petticoat" and landed on the ever wonderful Miss Victory Violet's blog and her comparison and review post on petticoats. After reading her awesome insights, I decided for round two I would get serious and off I went to the source of floofy, layered, soft, petticoat dreams, Malco Modes.

I purchased Malco Modes Samantha (26") petticoat in the color natural/ivory and wow, what a perfect petticoat indeed! The nylon chiffon is super soft and the two layers of ruffled petti provide tons of volume. I didn't really know what to expect with wearing a petticoat underneath my circle skirts (and dresses with circle skirt shaped skirts) but the effect is definitely noticeable and super dreamy! The whole big skirts make your waist look smaller effect is fun, and the swooshy swanning around is even more fun!

The length of the Samantha petticoat is perfect for underneath earlier mid-century hemlines, and I like my skirts longer anyway so having a petticoat on the longer-ish side is better for my wardrobe. I ordered the size medium which is listed as a 23"-46" waist size, and as I have a 30" waist I figured the fit would be just fine and it is, plus the waistband is elastic and has a button you can use to adjust it a bit bigger or smaller.

Here is the same dress with no petticoat on the left and with my new Malco Modes petti on the right. I feel like the difference doesn't even look that big in this photo comparison but it looked/felt much fuller and fun in person! I seriously can't even explain how nice it was to wear this petticoat, I am already thinking of how I can make more circle skirts so I can wear it more often! I also may be eyeing the Samantha Petticoat in black now, got to have a black one too right?

Overall I am super pleased with the purchase. Of course the Malco Modes petticoats are an investment at just shy of $70 dollars each for the style I purchased, but I think it is a worthwhile investment for anyone building a retro wardrobe. I hope they eventually come out with even more colors for the Samantha petti, as it is clear they offer more colors in their more established styles. I'd like a navy blue petti perhaps someday ;) Until then I'll keep saving up for the black, the only thing is...where do I store these things?!

    1. That is certainly a rather useful idea indeed. I'll have to figure something out as I am already eyeing the black color as a birthday present to myself this month...

  2. Great fashion loving minds! A navy crinoline/petticoat has been at the top of my undergarment wish list for years now. Hell Bunny has a version (it seems to come and go sporadically in terms of how easy it is to find online - at least at the online shops I frequent) that looks sensational. I own a couple HB crinolines already and would caution that, based on those two at least, they run very full. Not a bad thing necessarily in the slightest, but worth noting if one wanted more of a subtle degree of volume.

Congrats on your first higher end petticoat. "She's" an absolute beaut!

    1. Thank Jessica! I have read that the Hell Bunny petticoats are some of the best too, I wonder why Malco Modes hasn't done the Samantha in navy yet but perhaps someday. I suppose I can wear the ivory with almost anything which is why I decided on it in the first place ;)

  3. This is really interesting - thank you. I don't have any decent petticoats, and this helps a lot. The photos of 'with/without' show me why I should invest! Kx

    1. Happy to help! I never thought of myself as a "petticoat person" (whatever that means) but I have been proven very wrong indeed!

  4. It's always interesting to see how a dress' whole look can change with/without a petticoat. Either way your dress is lovely so is that amazing petticoat.

    1. Thank you Akram! This dress felt a lot more fancy with a petticoat funny enough, I think it's a good way to add some extra glamour :)

  5. If you don't mind used petticoats, including Malco Modes, you might want to keep an eye on the resashay website. They supply the square dancing community mostly, but they're a great place to find a deal on used petticoats.

    1. Thank for the tip! I think most vintage wearers are used to used things in general, I wish I knew the stories of some of the vintage that has ended up with me!

  7. Looks great, so full and swishy! I only have one petticoat and it is a bit scratchy as it wasn't very expensive. I would like one with more volume next.
