Tailoring Dreams and Inspiration

While I may have recently made a sort of suit by making a matching bolero for my tan skirt, I want a real proper suit next! Though I went to school for fashion design, I never managed to take a tailoring class. It is a great regret of mine- never learning the art of tailoring, but it isn't too late to dive in, so I am planning on doing just that! I mean just look at these chic ladies below...

Seriously, I need an early 50's suit! I have two fabrics already lined up for my first suiting projects. The first is a grey prince of wales wool with subtle accents of lavender and green which I think I want to make into something more 1940's. The second fabric is a most lovely plaid wool in black, blue, and green. The green and blue plaid suit will be more 50's in shape for variety! I also plan on investing in some classic black wool for another chic 50's suit. Think of how many ways it could be styled!

I sought out a good suit jacket pattern for a beginner to tailoring like me and will be getting Claire Shaeffer's Vogue pattern #8333 as it looks like a great base for a 50's shape and has great reviews online. I have a couple of tailoring books that I am sure will come in handy too as I delve into suiting for the first time. I will have to use all of my patience to go slow and take my time on these projects! I will be making a few mock up's too to test the pattern and modify it as I see fit for more vintage style-lines.

So that's what is coming up in my sewing queue for this winter. Have any of you ever made a 1950's style suit, how did it go? Any pointers?

  1. My MassArt student is JUST finishing up her tailoring class in the next week and a half, and I will be starting my own 40s suit for my December wedding in the next few days. (My fabric arrived today!!!!)

Would you like for me to photoblog the process?

    1. Oh certainly yes! I can use all the help I can get learning how to do it right, it seems so intimidating to me for some reason! And congratulations!

    2. I'll start in on that this weekend or so. I have to throw together the mockup.

  2. Also, this is the post where I linked a whole bunch of information when I was doing my initial research this summer. (Lucky me that my student was doing tailoring this fall so I ALSO will have her school notes to use!)

  3. Yes!! Cool :)
I've been meaning to make a suit for ages, so far just procrastination... I even bought fabric for it!
This was just what I needed for getting to it. There are so many lovely inspiration photos, I adore the two piece suit! Such a classic :)

  4. One of each suit, pretty please. :) Oh, if only!!! How on earth did perfectly tailored, endlessly elegant garments like this largely fall out of fashion. I love - and I mean uber love - a great vintage suit and were it not for the fact they're so hard to find in terms of a good fit off the rack for me, I could happily live in them and little else the whole year round (especially as I continue to age and feel that they suit my current stage of life better than ever now).

It's really exciting that you're planning to make a suit yourself and I wish you tons upon tons of success with it.

    Big hugs,
    ♥ Jessica

    1. Right?! I wish I could find vintage suits in my size! It seems 30" waists were not the norm, or at least they aren't around on etsy much now. I'll just have to make my own! Thanks for the good wishes, I fear I'll be needing them!

  5. I have made that blazer, and it is deluxe! I hope my sister wears it, or I will ask for it back. :) I can't wait to see yours.

    1. Oh I am so glad to hear you liked the end result! I'll still have to make a mock up first but it is so nice to hear!

  6. This is an exciting project, I like the fabrics hat you have chosen. Those Swansdown suits are particularly lovely and now I really want the giant leopard print muff!!
