Mini Review: Brooklyn

I happen to be a huge fan of Saoirse Ronan, so when I first saw the trailer for her newest film Brooklyn I was doubly excited; one of my favorite actresses and 1950's costumes! Neither disappointed in this wonderfuly enjoyable film!

The plot of the film follows young Eilis (Ronan) as she immigrates to Brooklyn from her native Ireland for a better life in America. Initially suffering from homesickness, Eilis struggles to find her place in the new city and adjust to her new job as a sales girl at a large women's department store. As she comes out of her shell she discovers that Brooklyn may prove to be more of a home than she'd ever thought possible, only to be drawn back on an urgent visit home to Ireland. She is a girl torn between two places, and two lives in a way we can all relate too. Saoirse carries the film effortlessly, elevating what could have been a very simple story to new heights with the depth she brings to every role she undertakes! And those eyes! I think she's both stunning and very talented.

Then there were the costumes...oh my goodness, so, so gorgeous! The knits in particular were amazing! I think they used a lot of original vintage pieces, and the authenticity shows in the beautiful ensembles! The store Eilis works at in Brooklyn looks like the most dreamy place to shop, if only we could all go back for just an afternoon of shopping in 1952. The deep blue embellished sweater pictured above was one of my favorite pieces from the film, I dream of such perfect sweaters! The orange suit Eilis wears for an important scene was such a surprising color and is so stunning! The other ladies in the film get great costumes too, especially the more vapid of Eilis' many Brooklyn roommates (well, fellow boarders at the boarding house she lives in) who got some brighter colors and were more glamorous. Whether in the background, or on Eilis' mother, there were several suits that had me nearly distracted from the story they were so chic! If you love 50's clothes (at lets face it if you are reading this, you probably do!) go see this film immediately!

Now I have a new mental wishlist of 50's items I need *ahem*...want to add to my closet! The acting was great, the costumes beautiful, treat yourself and find Brooklyn at a theater near you!

  2. I want to see this movie so much!!! The last time we were at the theater there was a preview and I was hooked instantly. From the vintage fashions to the fact that I lived in Ireland for a while, there's so much that resonates with me about this film.

    1. It is definitely a must see just for the clothes alone, but the film happens to be great too!
