Costume Favorites: Film Part 1

Last week I talked about some of my favorite costumes from the small screen, today I am moving onto film costumes!

My favorite film for costumes ever is Sophia Coppola's 2006 Marie Antoinette, it is just the ultimate costume eye candy to me. There are so many gorgeous gowns in the film, and I have many favorites. The soft yellow satin gown (seen above) with it's minty accents and zone front is one of my favorites from the film. I love how such a pastel gown is paired with a contrasting black ribbon as a necklace (foreshadowing?) and the beautiful silk flowers in her hair.

This redingote is a major favorite of mine too, it's just perfect with its simple lines and pretty little details. I'll have to make something like this gown one day, it is on my mental list of must makes!

This mauve gown is another beauty, I love how the pleated trim edges are black (I assume the fabric is a shot silk with black and the edges are simply frayed, but I cant really tell).

Seeing as I think Milena Canonero (The costume designer for Marie Antoinette) is so excellent at 18th century costumes, I have to mention this costume from another film she designed. The Affair of the Necklace doesn't make my list of favorite films, but this olive green jacket certainly does! So amazing, I love everything about it, that zone front with center front buttons, the black trim on the olive/moss green, the collar detailing and great cuffs. This has to one of my top favorite costumes ever, I just adore everything about it.

I know The Other Boleyn Girl is not a historically accurate film in most regards, but I still thought the costumes were pretty gorgeous. Anne's execution gown above is my favorite from the film. It appeals to my gothic side with all that black on black detailing.

Other pre-18th century favorites include the soft green gown on the lady in waiting above from the film Elizabeth. I have always loved this gown, I love the velvet paired with the sheer sleeves, I love the little double puff sleeves, the detailing on the cuffs, jut everything about it! I absolutely will be making something just like this one day, I even already have the velvet for the bodice!

As for the second film, Elizabeth the Golden Age, it seems they went even more over the top with the costumes and they are gorgeous. These two gowns are my favorites from the film, though it is full of sumptuous gowns and crazy hairstyling/wigs and ruffs.

I have more favorites of course, but I'll get into those next week! What is your favorite historical film costume? There are so many period films I have yet to see, so I know I will fall in love with many more costumes in the future :)

  1. Marie Antoinette is my favorite costume film as well! My first (successful) attempt at historical costuming was a gown from that film. I also always have been a fan of the costuming in the '68 version of Romeo and Juliet, and Atonement.

    1. The costumes are just sooo pretty in Marie Antoinette! I too like the '68 Romeo and Juliet costumes, even if I only have seen that version because it is still the one they show in high school!

  2. I love Marie Antoinette! As a historical person and that film, and its costumes. Definitely eye candy :) I have not seen "Elizabeth" but I really want to.

    1. I completely agree, my brain almost exploded with excitement for that very reason when I actually visited Versailles back in 2012. I definitely recommend Elizabeth, I really like the film and the costumes!

  3. Oo you picked some good 'uns here! I tend to favour 20th century fashions, but if I was to pick historical costume I would have to say Gone With The Wind x

    1. Thanks Porcelina! I love both ardently, and there will be more 20th century favorites in part two!

  4. A huge yes to all of these films. The Other Boyenn Girl has some of the most incredible historical costuming I've ever seen. I rewatched it twice in the same month as my first viewing just to soak it up and pine to try dressing from that century myself, too (who knows, maybe one day!).

    1. As much as I know the film isn't historically accurate, even the costumes aren't very historically accurate, I really like those costumes! It's obvious Sandy Powell was going for a modern take on tudor styles, I think a great costumer like her would know how to do more authentic costumes if that was the way the filmmakers wanted to go. The film is based on a fiction novel, not facts, so I don't know why people get so worked up about the inaccuracies! The colors were gorgeous!

  5. I have never seen Marie Antoinette, I had better remedy that! I really enjoy looking at costumes from all periods but the 1930's-50's are my absolute favourites.
