Pin-up Hair and a New Rose Blouse

where is the spring green?

Lots of photos today because I am so excited about how my hair turned out! I have never, not even once, gotten my hair to cooperate into bumper bangs with victory rolls like this! Victory indeed! Hopefully this means I will be able to do it again, I have been dreaming of wearing my hair in this style for years!

Anyways, enough about my hair. I made this blouse recently (another of my kimono sleeved adventures) with fabric from the new fabric line designed by Gertie Hirsch of Gertie's Blog for Better Sewing! I was so excited when I heard she would be designing a range of retro inspired fabrics for Fabric Traditions and Joanns. It can be so hard to find great prints in an apparel weight cotton, as most pretty prints are done on quilting cotton which can be quite heavy and stiff for some projects. This lovely rose print swiss-dot voile was great to work with and even more comfortable to wear. Head out and stock up on some of these fabrics while you can!

The skirt is also a recent sewing project, I wanted an army green cotton pencil skirt for this upcoming summer (for some more safari-ish outfits). I also made a matching vest, so I hope to show you the two together soon. I actually made these 50's style earrings a long time ago using the technique I explain at the end of this post. I would like to make some more earrings in this style in different colors to wear this summer. I had long thought I'd lost this parasol in my many moves throughout college, but it turns out it was at my parents house all that time in my childhood closet. My dad bought it for me at the Colorado Renaissance Fair, and after all what says Renaissance more than an Chinese parasol? In any case I am glad to have it back after having thought it lost! It worked quite well today providing me shade during our short turn about the Chatfield Botanic Gardens. I can't wait for the leaves to return to the trees and flowers to bloom once more, come on spring!

  1. Oh my word, how much do I love this whole gorgeous outfit? Not only do the pops of pink make me swoon, but the olive green pencil skirt (I've been hunting for one, to no avail in my size + budget, for several months now), and your fabulous hairstyle really do it for me, too. Awesome look, Bianca, it really rocks on you!

    1. Thank you Jessica! More incentive to take up sewing! Pencil skirts are not crazy difficult on the scale of sewing projects, and that's why I have made so many of them! :)

  2. Wow! You look amazing in these photos. The fifth one could be on a pin up calendar. The blouse and pencil skirt look great together. Any chance of a hair tutorial for this fab style?

    1. Thank you Kate! This was the first time I ever got this hairstyle to work, so once I can practice a bit more and actually master it, I shall consider doing a tutorial!
