Plaid Noir in the Snow

Sorry about the photo spam, I really liked a lot of today's photos! I wanted to wear one of my vintage hats, this one is about ready to come apart but I just adore the shape! It's a stiff bow that sort of clips on the top of the head. Sadly the velvet is started to come apart at the seams, I wish I knew how to make a hat like this so I could have another!

I don't wear this blouse very often, though I should wear it more because it makes me feel like a film noir dame. I think its the dramatic sleeves and huge bow. I have another in ivory that I also rarely wear. I avoid lighter colors even though I am trying to work on wearing them more often! I made this plaid wool skirt just before leaving for study abroad in London back in 2011/2012. I wore it for the first time on my first day in London touring Kensington Palace and then getting lost in Hyde Park. I was so tired and jet lagged that day, but looking back I would give anything to be wandering in Hyde Park again now. The local historic mansion yard will have to do for now.

  1. That hat is indeed gorgeous and really flattering. I desperately want to know more about it and see how to make it too! Any chance of some more photos of it?

    1. Thanks Tanith! I can more photos soon but I'll describe it as well. Ready for millinery CSI?

It seems to be made of buckram or stiff canvas with wired edges, I can only assume it is a higher gauge of wire than I am used to using when making hats as it is springy and retains its shape despite needing to be bent slightly to "clip" the hat onto ones head. The form is of a bow and is essentially (seemingly) one long strip of wired buckram formed into the sculptural bow. I cant tell if it was wired before or after being arranged in the "bow" but I have to assume after because the wire is so stiff. The hat is covered with a long napped black velvet and the nap has been combed or steamed down, I assume to look like short fur? I also cant really tell if the velvet was put on before or after the "bow" was arranged. The hat seems so stiff that I would normally think it was blocked, but all other indications seem to suggest otherwise. The velvet seems to be glued in some areas and stitched in others! There is no lining or label, the same velvet continues over the inside. It is quite the little conundrum! I'd sorta love to take it apart, but I also love it too much to do so! When it does finally fall apart I'll have more answers!

  2. Seriously beautiful photos and outfits. I love the mix of light and shadows at work here as well as that enchantingly pretty dress. Very inspiring location for winter shoots!

  3. Sorry, I meant to day skirt - not dress (lol, can you tell what garment is usually at the forefront of my mind :D).

    1. Thank you Jessica! I am so excited to have discovered that the mansion gardens/lawn are open every day as it has been making outfit shoots a lot easier to organize! Winter can be more difficult as you know, I am already dreaming of spring flowers!
